Moving cars with your belongings
Can I have stuff in my car during freight? Is it insured? Car freight companies are often asked these two questions. And the simple answer to both is … no!
Clear out your car before freight
Your car, truck, motorbike, van or commercial vehicle and its boot compartment must be free of all personal belongings. There are several reasons for this:
- Safety
- Insurance
- Weight

Safety
Most car freight companies do not allow you to leave personal possessions inside the vehicle. This is mostly for safety and insurance reasons. You might know all the nooks and crannies in your car, but freight company employees won't. And that puts them at risk.
Insurance
Car carrier insurance doesn't cover your items during freight. That leaves you no recourse if your car arrives minus a few belongings after it's been transported. So best not to take the risk.
Weight
Like all Australian freight, car transport is regulated. All car freighters have weight limitations they must comply with. Any excess weight from personal items within the vehicle can put the transportation vehicle over its weight limitation. And that's likely to cause freight delays.
Other items to remove from the car before freight
Apart from your personal possessions, also prohibited during car freight are:
- vehicle spare parts,
- suitcases,
- boxes etc.
A properly secured spare tyre, jack or a fixed baby seat will be acceptable.
Pre freight inspection
Car freight personnel will carry out an inspection for personal items prior to transportation. So, to save time and possible embarrassment it’s best to ensure your car is completely free of such items. You don't want to run the risk of having the carrier reject your car.
Special circumstances
Individual circumstances sometimes arise where a car freight company is able to arrange for transportation of personal possessions. If you feel this applies to you, speak with the car freight company first.
Some car freight companies may suggest the services of a specialised carrier who can transportat your personal items separately from your vehicle.
Whatever arrangements you make, it is vital to mention any special considerations at the time of the quoting or booking process.
