Roofing Tips and Hints

We’ve put together a few handy tips and hints that might help you keep that roofing project on track.

  1. Compare quotes.  Look at a number of different roofers and decide who suits you best.  Always consider the price quality relationship.  Cheaper isn’t always better.
  2. Ask what materials will be used and how this affects the quality and price of the job.
  3. Point out any damage you’ve noticed.  This will help the roofer assess your roof and provide an accurate quote.
  4. Inspect the materials that will be used.  Make sure they are what you discussed with your roofer.
  5. You can help your roofer by organising a dry area for materials to be stored.  Water can do a lot of damage to roofing materials.  This could add to your cost.
  6. Ask your roofer what exactly will be involved in the job.  Will the gutters need replacing? Will he change the tiles?  What about the insulation.  Be sure to have a clear picture of what is happening.
  7. Make sure your gutters are cleaned regularly.  This will keep rot and damage at bay, and makes your roofer’s job much easier.
  8. If your furniture needs to be moved, do this well before the roofer arrives.
  9. Make sure you know the location of the roof cavity entrance (man hole).  Roofers need to work from the inside as well.
  10. Do not allow children or animals to run around while the roofer works.  Even with multiple safety measures, a roofing job is dangerous.  Falling materials are a hazard.
  11. Try and keep the area around your house clear of objects.  Give your roofer easy access to the house surrounds and the roof cavity.

If you’re attempting the job yourself:

  1. Make sure you have the right safety equipment and take every precaution possible.  Walking around and working on your roof is dangerous.
  2. Keep all your materials cool and dry.  The weather can damage insulation and warp or expand trusses.
  3. Do your research.  What kind of roof are you using?  What angle are the trusses set at? Make sure your new tiles match your original tiles.  Make sure that when you are on your roof, you know exactly what you’re doing.
  4. Be precise.  Check and recheck all your measurements and materials.
  5. A roof is not only a cover, it also affects heat distribution in your home.  Make sure insulation is installed evenly.
  6. Don’t underestimate the dangers of working at height. Consider hiring a professional.
