Outdoor Kitchens

A backyard barbecue is one of the great joys of summer. But if burning a few snags in your rusty old Weber doesn't quite fulfil the great Australian dream, then why not upgrade your home with a fully functional outdoor kitchen?

Benefits of the outdoor kitchen

A steamy indoor kitchen isn't a fun place to be in the height of summer. Move your cooking outdoors and benefit from cool breezes and unlimited ventilation.

Building an outdoor kitchen is much cheaper than an indoor kitchen renovation , and will add significant value to your home.

Where to build your outdoor kitchen

If you've got a deck or patio, you're already halfway there. Make sure the deck is strong enough to hold all your kitchen elements, and that there's nothing close to the grill that might catch fire!

If you're going for a gas cook top, install it close to your existing gas line.

If you prefer a charcoal grill, place it far away from any white walls and surfaces to avoid smoke stains.

Choosing a cook top

Gas is the most popular fuel choice for an outdoor cook top. You can connect it to your natural gas line, or use bottled LPG. There is a large range of cook top sizes available, so consider how many people you are likely to be cooking for.

Briquettes, charcoal or wood-fired BBQs can also be used to slow-cook large cuts of meat.

Electric hot plates are available, but can be slow to heat.

Optional extras

  1. Fridge - a small bar fridge will cut out those trips inside for ingredients (and more importantly - cold beer).
  2. Sink - an outdoor sink means no more carrying dirty dishes inside after the barbie.
  3. Rotisserie - fancy yourself a souvlaki specialist? Add an electric rotisserie and cook enough lamb for a whole footy team!
  4. Wok Burner - choose a gas cooker with a dedicated wok burner and whip up a sizzling stir-fry under the stars.
